10/1: Laser Cutter

3D PAPER DOLLS Danielle, Ren and I created 3-D Paper dolls of ourselves for our decorative laser cutter project. I first thought of the idea of a paper doll after seeing the example of the house of cards. I was thinking of 2-Dimensional objects that kids can build to stand and thought about standing dolls. After discussing the idea in depth with Danielle, we came up with the idea of making dolls of ourselves, and when Ren joined our group after being absent in class, we knew we had to make a set of three! We began the process by photographing ourselves standing in a similar "doll-like" pose and started our original work in Photoshop because we all felt we had more experience creating manipulations there. After turning our photographs to black and white, we also added filters to make the image look more graphic with some "drawing" features, more similar to what you might see on a paper doll, and then created an outline around each form that also included a...

8/1: Stop Motion

With Halloween on the brain, pumpkins seemed like the perfect platform for a stop-motion storyline. They also had a thick, shiny surface that allowed for facial animation that really helped to solidify the narrative through the main character's [the pumpkin's] emotions to the actions happening around him. Similar to the scanography assignment, the nature of stop-motion led me to want to pursue a narrative that was fun! As silly as it sounds, a lot of the art work I do tends to be serious, or at least I take it somewhat seriously, but right away this jerky form of motion made me want to instantly do something more fun, comical, slap-sticky and with funny expressions. You can see why the format leads perfectly to cute clay characters like Wallace and Gromit. 6/3: IMPACT 25

Sourcing our participants through our own social and social media circles, Sarah and I have created the Inspiration Grid. I am very excited about the wide range of videos we received - attesting to the idea that inspiration can come from multitudes of sources. Having all of the videos collected in one place has truly created a concept of community and epitomizes how digital media can be used to share ideas and make a positive impact. The concept leads me to consider what a self-sufficient Inspiration Grid project could look like - where similar to YouTube or other video sharing sites, creatives could upload their own videos creating a bigger and bigger network where if you were ever at a road block in your personal work, or even had some time to kill, you could go to one curated source to get your mind working.
